Vehicle Safety Reflective Markings

Date: 19-12-2011

From January 2012 conspicuity marking will become part of annual HGV testing following on from the implementation of the ECE014 regulation.

What is Regulation ECE104?

The regulation ECE104 became mandatory from the 10th July 2011. All newly registered HGVS with a mass over 7.5 tonnes and trailers with a mass over 3.5 tonnes operating in the UK must be fitted with the reflective markings.

Why has it been introduced?

ECE104 was introduced to help save lives. The use of retro-reflective safety markings is already in use in Italy and Germany plus other countries. Extensive research shows that by applying the reflective conspicuity tape the visibility of the vehicle is greatly increased therefore reducing the number of accidents on the roads. By reducing accidents on the road it means that you reduce the costs of repair and the time that your vehicle is off the road.

Where do I need to apply the reflective tape?

A complete contour line needs to be applied to the rear of the vehicle in RED or AMBER tape.

On the side of the vehicle you can choose from two options, you can either have a complete contour line or a partial contour line in the corners in AMBER or WHITE tape.

The tape that is used must be a minimum of 50mm wide.

The tape must show the official E-mark. The E-mark proves that the product has been extensively tested and certified. The E-mark will be printed within the approved marking tape at least every 50cm.

Exempt vehicles that don’t require the reflective markings

• A none goods vehicle
• Chassis cabs
• Vehicles/trailers with overall width not exceeding 2.1m
• Vehicles/trailers with overall length not exceeding 6m (vehicle length excludes cab).

Vehicles registered before July 10th don’t require the markings by law, but it is strongly advised that you do have the reflective tape applied.
