A step back in time for the Ast Signs workshop
The Ast Signs workshop took a step back in time last week when a 1976 Mercedes rally car was taken back to its rallying days.
Ast Signs produced cut vinyl and printed graphics to replicate the car from 1976 when it was entered into the Lombard Rally on the 27th – 30th November 1976, which was sponsored by Johnson supreme car wax. The car was driven in the rally by Chris Field and Keith Read. The vehicle was originally green when the owner first bought it. He then had it painted black after its rallying days then it was brought to Ast Signs for the graphics to be added to the sides and the bonnet of the vehicle. The graphics were printed on Avery and 3M material and then fitted to the car at our head office in Penrith. The graphics have the original sponsor’s details for the Johnson rally, our designers have carefully copied the previous graphics to make them look identical. The graphics can be easily removed from the Mercedes when needed without any damage to the car so it can be restored to its original state.
The owner Nicky Porter decided to add the graphics to the car as the RAC have allowed historic vehicles to enter into rallies as long as they have their period livery on them.
“I wanted to use Ast Signs as I know of them in industry and I know that they take pride in their work and in rally cars. I was amazed when I saw the car finished, it is the first time I have seen it like that since 1976. It has completely changed the look of the vehicle and it looks very fresh. I took the vehicle to a show after the work had been done and lots of people stopped to admire the graphics.”
Nicky Porter still races the car now.
