Aston Wins British Formula Kart Stars Championship

Date: 25-10-2010

Aston Wins British Formula Kart Stars Championship

Nathan Aston has been crowned the MSA British Cadet Champion in the Formula Kart Stars series after claiming two heat wins at rounds 11 and 12 to seal championship victory. He follows in the wheel-tracks of former Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton who was Cadet Champion in 1996.

The 13-year-old Cumbrian came into the last two rounds at Ellough Park in East Anglia in second position in the championship but his heat victories, and a steady head in the Final, meant he claimed enough points to overhaul his rivals and take the highly-coveted top spot.

Formula Kart Stars is widely accepted to be the proving ground for young British hopefuls aiming for motorsport stardom and, as such, is backed by the Formula 1 Management with Formula 1 champ Hamilton the Patron of the series.

Aston, a pupil at Appleby Grammar School, is in only his second season of top karting action. Last year he also competed in the Cadet series but it was very much a development year and a chance to learn some of the different tracks. But his performances this year have really belied his experience and Aston has delivered some stunning, and calculated drives, to claim the title in one of the most competitive classes out there.

He kicked off the 2010 season with a win at his home track in Rowrah using his Fusion-run Zip Kart. He knew the Cumbrian circuit well but had to step things up a gear when the battle recommenced at less familiar tracks.

One of his best performances of the season was at Genk when the series travelled overseas to Belgium. He had little experience of the circuit but rose to the challenge at a crucial part of the season to take victory in the Final by over 10 seconds – a gap virtually unheard of in the tightly-fought series.

But it was his drive at Ellough Park that was the most calculated and demonstrated the youngster’s maturity. He delivered a stunning performance under pressure to take two heat wins which meant he could stay out of trouble in the Final. Bringing the kart home in third position was enough to take the points needed and clinch the coveted title of British Cadet Champion.

Aston is currently reviewing options for next season’s competition but this title will certainly make racing team managers sit up and take note of the young karter from Cumbria.

Ast Signs karter Nathan Aston said:
“It’s a dream come true. We’ve had a tough season and in some races the lead has been changing many times every lap. But the hard work has been well worth it – to win this title is just fantastic. I had to concentrate really hard this weekend as the championship could go any way but winning two heats took the pressure off a bit. I just can’t believe I’m now the British Champion as we expected this year to be a learning one again but I’ve been on the pace at every track and it’s just come together well.”
