The sun shone down on Cumbrian Triathlon
Date: 03-09-2009Sunday 30th August – It was the second annual Penrith Triathlon organised by Eden District Council and in partnership with Arragons Cumbrian Triathlon Club.
For many it was their first crack at a triathlon, including Anna Aston, who is one of the team here at AstSigns Ltd. The event also drew competitors from triathlon clubs across the UK - One Life Triathlon, the Royal Air Force Tri Team, one of the Team GBR squad as well as competitors from Carlisle and Tri Lakeland to name a few.
There was intrigue, too, from local sports clubs with several Eden Runners and Border City Wheelers represented. It is not surprising that triathlons are one of the fastest growing sports, enjoying an all-welcome atmosphere.
Starting with a 400m swim in the pool, competitors then mounted up for a 25k cycle taking in some of the Eden Valley’s finest views… and one or two challenging climbs. The last discipline was a 5k run round the school’s football and cricket pitches.
Speaking, event referee Phil Graham said:
‘We had a couple of records broken this year with Arragons Cumbrian Triathlon Club member Jon Fletcher taking the overall win in a course record time of 1hour6 minutes. The ladies winner was Diane Jackson who crossed the line in another ladies record time of 1hour 14.’
‘The support of marshals who gave up their whole day to ensure the smooth running of the event was greatly appreciated. Spectator numbers were also up by a great deal, which added to the tremendous atmosphere on the day. We look forward to working with Eden District Council again for the next event, which promises to be even bigger!
